Most of the Ballads and songs listed above are about the Mourne
area.
Most of these Ballads and Poems I have never heard of before starting
to have a look at the history of the area. Most people that have
ever heard of the Mountains of Mourne think of Percy French, yes
indeed he was a very talented gentleman and done a lot to promote
the Mournes. We do have a lot more people who wrote poems and songs
about our native area. Redmond Doran, Henry Purdy (Annalong), D.
Haughian are just Three from many and I think that they should also
be given credit for their talents.
Most of these songs and poems are from a time well past and its
thanks to the likes of named above for their skills that captured
what life was like. This way we are able to read about times gone
past even if it is in verse and marvel at the lifestyle of our forefathers.
One of the more surprising songs that I managed to find was one
about Attical, for those of you who do not know Attical is a beautiful
small village set in the Mountains of Mourne behind Knockcree, I
went to school with many people from Attical and the surrounding
area and never once heard about this song. I cannot remember exactly
where I managed to get it from or who the composer was, I make it
to be around 90-100 years old. This song when read will surprise
a lot of people as Attical is not to close to the sea, I think that
the song was meant as a joke but a nice sounding joke it is all
these years later. The name of the song is "The Shipwreck At
Attical".
